Euxton Girl’s Under 9’s, the grass roots all girls football team sponsored by Metpark UK has claimed a prestigious victory in its first ever season.
Despite training being hindered by lockdowns and Covid 19 restrictions, the newly formed team fought their way through to the U9 Girls’ Plate Final of the Poulton and District Primary League.
Facing stiff opposition from established team Blackpool FC Ladies Under 9’s, the players met on a very wet and cold Saturday at Highbury Stadium, the home of Fleetwood Town FC.
Euxton got off to a great start, stealing two goals in the first fifteen minutes thanks to Nicola McKenzie and Lily Betteridge. Blackpool then retaliated before Nicole McKenzie secured a hat trick taking it to 1-4 to Euxton.
Blackpool fought back but, thanks to great defending, the game finished in Euxton’s favour at 3-4.
Says David Chester, Assistant Coach for Euxton Girls Under 9’s and Metpark UK’s Car Park Design Manager, “To win a coveted prize in their first season as a new team is a fantastic achievement. However, if we add to this that most have never played competitive football before and there have been very limited opportunities for team training, or training of any kind for that matter, due to lockdown then this victory is even more impressive.
“We’re incredibly proud of our squad. We can’t wait to see what they do next,” he adds.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, the match was live streamed on You Tube allowing friends and family to watch and cheer the teams on by posting comments.
